How to Calculate Chronological Age Manually: Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to compute date of birth chronological age calculations by hand using right-to-left calendar borrowing rules across days, months, and leap years.

The Right-to-Left Subtraction Method

When computing chronological age by hand on assessment protocols (such as CELF-5, WISC-V, or Brigance), evaluators subtract the date of birth from the testing date using standard arithmetic subtraction working from right to left: Days, then Months, then Years.

Calendar Borrowing Rules

If the test day is smaller than the birth day, you must borrow days from the preceding month column. Unlike standard base-10 math where you borrow 10, in calendar math you borrow the exact number of days in the previous calendar month (28, 29, 30, or 31 days). Similarly, if borrowing months, you add 12 months to the month column.
