Chronological Age vs Biological Age in Assessments

Understand the key differences between chronological age and biological age markers when conducting psychological, speech, and developmental evaluations.

Defining Chronological vs. Biological Age

Chronological age is the exact calendar time elapsed from an examinee's date of birth to the assessment date. It is absolute and invariant. In contrast, biological age refers to physiological maturation markers, development of neural or motor pathways, or physical health indicators.

Why Standardized Testing Requires Chronological Age

Standardized diagnostic instruments (such as the WISC-V, CELF-5, and WAIS-IV) establish normative scoring bands indexed strictly against chronological age in years, months, and days. Evaluators must compute accurate chronological age to locate the correct normative table page.
